FIFA has announced a new format for the 2026 World Cup draw on December 5, designed to prevent the top-ranked teams from facing each other in the early knockout rounds. Spain, Argentina, France, and England, the four highest-ranked sides, will be placed in separate sections of a tennis-style seeded bracket. This ensures they cannot meet before the semifinals if they win their respective groups.

Hosts Canada, Mexico, and the United States, along with the nine other highest-ranked nations, will be in Pot 1. FIFA emphasized that this structure aims to reward top teams while balancing competitiveness across the tournament.

Top Teams Placed Strategically

Defending champions Argentina and top-ranked Spain will be placed on opposite sides of the bracket, preventing a potential early clash. France and England, ranked third and fourth, will also be separated. Besides that, guaranteeing that the four strongest sides cannot meet before the final stages.

The remaining teams are distributed into Pots 2, 3, and 4 based on FIFA rankings. Besides that, with Pot 2 including countries like Croatia, Morocco, and Uruguay. Pot 3 and Pot 4 will comprise the lower-ranked teams and the six intercontinental playoff winners.

To maintain competitive fairness, FIFA will avoid placing teams from the same confederation in the same group, except for Europe, which has more teams than groups. This means four groups will have two European sides, while the others will have one.

Canada’s group stage schedule includes a June 12 opener at BMO Field against a Pot 4 team, a second match in Vancouver versus a Pot 3 team, and a finale against a Pot 2 team. FIFA’s schedule ensures each host has balanced challenges while showcasing matches across multiple cities.

FIFA will assign the three host nations to predetermined positions in Pot 1. Besides that, the remaining top teams are randomly drawn into group positions. This method guarantees that top-ranked Spain, Argentina, France, and England can only meet in the semifinals or final.
