Lucas Paqueta revealed that he tried to leave West Ham last summer to return to his former club, Flamengo. The Brazilian midfielder admitted that Flamengo approached him in May 2025 after he had faced four spot-fixing charges from the English Football Association. Despite the investigation, Paqueta expressed his strong desire to reunite with the club that shaped his early career.

Paqueta explained, “The second moment [that I had talks with Flamengo], incredibly enough, was when I already knew I could continue playing normally. That’s when I felt even more of a desire to return to Flamengo.” He added that his conversations with Flamengo coach Filipe Luis, who is also a friend, strengthened his wish to return, showing the personal bond he has with the club.
Even though Flamengo attempted to sign him again during the summer, Paqueta decided not to force the transfer. He emphasized that his respect for West Ham was the main reason behind his choice. “I really expressed my desire to return and also showed it to my agents,” he said, showing transparency in his intentions.
Respect for West Ham and Professionalism
Despite his strong wish to go back to Brazil, Lucas Paqueta highlighted the importance of professionalism. He decided not to pressure West Ham, respecting the club that supported him throughout his career in England. His decision reflected maturity and a commitment to maintain good relations with his current team.
Paqueta said, “It was a difficult decision because I’m 28 years old, I’m very young, and I still have a lot of market value out here.” He acknowledged that balancing personal desires with professional obligations was challenging but necessary. Respecting the club’s interests took priority over personal preferences at that moment.
He further stated, “I tried very hard, but unfortunately, once again, I decided to respect my club, not to force anything, because it’s a club that supported me, that I have enormous affection for.” This quote emphasizes the bond he maintains with West Ham while still keeping Flamengo in his heart.

A Return That Will Happen Eventually

Paqueta is confident that he will return to Flamengo one day, even if it is not immediate. He believes that the club’s doors will always remain open for him, and he will eventually fulfill his dream of playing for them again.
He said, “I understood that it wasn’t the right time, but I know the doors will always be open for me. I know that at some point this return will happen.” This statement shows his long-term vision and commitment to returning to his roots in Brazil when the time is right.
Although his current contract with West Ham runs until June 2027, Paqueta is patient and willing to wait for the perfect opportunity to return. His focus remains on performing well in England while keeping the Flamengo dream alive.
Preparing for Brazil’s International Duty
Currently, Paqueta is training with the Brazil national team in London ahead of their friendly against Senegal at the Emirates Stadium. After navigating the challenges with West Ham and the cleared spot-fixing charges, he is fully focused on contributing to the national squad.
Paqueta’s dedication to both club and country highlights his professionalism and resilience. Even while thinking about Flamengo, he remains committed to his responsibilities with West Ham and Brazil.
He added, “I will continue working hard for my teams, but Flamengo will always be in my plans.” This balance demonstrates a player who can manage personal dreams alongside professional duties. Stay tuned for the latest football news only at footballcoasters.co.uk.
